10 Commandments for Independent Teachers

  1. Thou shalt teach to the glory of God and for the love of thy neighbor.
  2. Thou shalt own more books than you will ever read in your lifetime—a number of them being well-read and marked up.
  3. Thou shalt strive to be the expert in thy field while also reading broadly and learning new languages.
  4. Thou shalt write every day and publish at regular intervals.
  5. Thou shalt always be prepared to teach.
  6. Thou shalt teach students and not curriculum.
  7. Thou shalt study thy students and pray for them daily.
  8. Thou shalt not inflate thy students’ grades or teach to the test.
  9. Thou shalt create and maintain an interesting and influential presence on social media.
  10. Thou shalt keep the Sabbath and rest from thy labors regularly.

Scott served as a minister for 20 years and as a Christian educator for 25 years. He earned degrees in the humanities (Ph.D. [ABD], Faulkner University), classical studies (M.A.C.C.S., Knox Theological Seminary), religion and English literature (B.S., Liberty University), and creative writing (A.A., College of Southern Nevada). He also earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in theology from a former denominational institution back in the day.
